Reports are flooding in of ISIS militants surrounding the city, and controlling much of Baghdad’s suburbs and farms to the north and west of the city. Current photos taken in Ramadi which is only 110 km or about 60 miles west of Baghdad is completely over run with the Islamic State. Last night, ISIS was attacking Iraqi military check points only 8 miles outside the city. Recent car bombs suspected by ISIS has also increased within the past 48 hours, the most deadly killing 8 people on Tuesday.
It has not been confirmed by the US government that Baghdad is under extreme threat, but I expect that it will come out in the next few days. Since the bombing strikes by the US and allied nations started about a week ago seem to be driving the Islamic State southward towards Baghdad. If they do take Baghdad, it could provide shelter from the air strikes as they blend in with Iraqi civilians.
