Wild is a film I had heard whispers about for the last month or two. I remember seeing the trailer, and seeing Reese Witherspoon hiking in the desert looking exhausted. I had no idea what this movie would be about. But the film is actually pretty damn beautiful and one of the best this year. I am so glad I decided to see this film before the end of the year, sneaking off to catch a showing of a small, independent film that gets a limited release is always exciting.
This film is about a chronicle of one woman’s 1,100-mile solo hike undertaken as a way to recover from a recent catastrophe. Reese Witherspoon is that woman, Cheryl, who gives a great performance, probably the best performance she’s given in years, she has to carry the entire film on her shoulders and she pulls it off. So it opens up with Cheryl wandering the desert. And the way the first act unfolds, we just get snippets of information, glimpses and flashes of images, all detailing backstory and exposition – but the movie never spells it out for you or beats you over the head with it.
